Community Information for Assistant Director Applicants

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library serves nearly all of Howard County, Indiana.  Located in Central Indiana, Indianapolis’ northern collar counties are less than an hour’s drive south of Kokomo and Chicago is a three hour drive northwest.  The library’s long history of providing library service to the community stretches back well over 100 years.  Currently, the library enjoys good relationships with local organizations and businesses, a positive reputation in the community, and is featured in a monthly column in the newspaper.

Kokomo itself historically has been a manufacturing hub and has made state and national news for its economic recovery after the recent recession.  The City provides free public transportation, an expansive network of biking and walking trails, and more.  Visit the City of Kokomo’s website to learn more about recent events and awards.  Just recently, the City’s beautification efforts put it in the spotlight.  It also is one of the most affordable places to live in America.  Its manufacturing history includes serving as home to the United States’ oldest art glass company, renowned for its work since the gold medal it won at the Paris Worlds’ Fair.

It is also an exciting time for Kokomo area schools.  Kokomo Schools offer a certified International Baccalaureate program as well as an Integrated Arts program in magnet schools.   Northwestern Elementary School’s robotics team is ranked internationally.  Our community was also chosen as a site for Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities, a small business development program that will begin later this year.
